Bold Defense is a Pauper staple in white weenie and go-wide aggro builds, where a single mana saving your whole board from a sweeper or flipping a race is exactly the kind of tempo swing that decides games. In Commander, it sees far less play — combat tricks are generally weak at multiplayer tables where your opponents can just wait out your attack step, and the +0/+3 toughness boost rarely closes games at 40 life. Legacy and Vintage have no real home for it either; those formats aren't interested in defensive tricks at this power level. Oathbreaker is the closest Commander-adjacent format where it could matter, since games are faster and protecting a board state is more urgent.
