Bloody Betrayal card art
Bloody Betrayal gives you instant-speed sacrifice with a life-drain rider attached — the effect is real, and three mana at sorcery speed is the only honest knock against it. In Brion Stoutarm and similar "fling" strategies, the life loss your opponent eats stacks meaningfully on top of the damage you're already dealing.

Brion Stoutarm

Brion Stoutarm

25.9% of decks · synergy 0.25

Brion Stoutarm already wants to sacrifice creatures for damage, and Bloody Betrayal doubles down by draining life equal to the creature's power before it even hits the graveyard — two separate pain vectors from a single body.

Strefan, Maurer Progenitor

Strefan, Maurer Progenitor

Strefan, Maurer Progenitor needs blood tokens and dead creatures to fuel his vampire engine, and Bloody Betrayal generates both simultaneously while removing a blocker or setting up a chump-sacrifice on a token.

Bloody Betrayal is legal everywhere that matters but finds its clearest home in Commander, where the life-loss clause hits a single player hard and sacrifice synergies are plentiful. In Pauper it competes with a deep pool of cheap removal and sacrifice outlets, so it needs a dedicated payoff to justify the slot. Modern and Pioneer have faster clocks that make a three-mana sorcery-speed sacrifice spell too slow unless you're building around it deliberately. Legacy and Vintage move too fast for it to see real play.

Price Context

Current price

$0.29 bulk tier

At $0.29, Bloody Betrayal is firmly bulk — you're not paying for scarcity, you're paying for cardboard. That price is stable; niche Commander demand keeps it from being a quarter-bin throwaway, but nothing here suggests it climbs.
