Bloodline Shaman card art
Bloodline Shaman turns any creature-heavy tribal deck into a self-sustaining card engine, repeatedly digging for creatures of a chosen type on a two-mana body that pays for itself over multiple activations. The catch is variance — hitting the wrong type on a whiff means no card and no replacement, so it rewards decks where the vast majority of creatures share a type.

Bloodline Shaman is a Commander card through and through — the tribal density required to make the card reliable simply doesn't exist in Legacy or Vintage, where creature counts are low and type consistency is even lower, making it a non-starter in those formats despite legality. In Commander, it earns a slot specifically in tribal decks running 25 or more creatures of a single type, where the hit rate climbs high enough to treat it as repeatable card draw rather than a coin flip. Outside of that context — goodstuff piles, non-tribal builds, even loosely tribal decks with mixed creature types — Bloodline Shaman underperforms badly and should be left in the binder.
