Blessed Alliance card art
Blessed Alliance is a flexible instant that can force an opponent to sacrifice an attacking creature, gain you life, or untap your blockers — and escalate lets you stack all three for four mana. The floor is narrow removal that dodges hexproof and indestructible; the ceiling is a full combat reversal that swings games.

In Commander, Blessed Alliance earns its slot primarily as an answer to Voltron strategies — the forced-sacrifice mode hits the suited-up hexproof commander that conventional removal can't touch, and the escalate options let you squeeze extra value when you have the mana. In Modern and Legacy it has seen sideboard play for the same reason, punishing equipment and aura builds that go wide on keywords. Pioneer offers a comparable shell where its role is roughly the same: cheap, instant-speed interaction against recursive or protected threats. Across formats, the card rewards patience — held up at end of turn, it often does more than two of its modes suggest.
