Blastoderm enters as a 5/5 with shroud for three turns — one of the best rate-for-mana creatures ever printed at four mana — and the catch is that it fades away and sacrifices itself after those three counters are gone. In formats where you can exploit it before it dies, it overperforms; anywhere it just swings and disappears without payoff, it's a vanilla beater on a timer.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Blastoderm is a fringe inclusion at best — a 5/5 that can't be targeted by your own spells, dies in three turns, and leaves no lasting board presence is a hard sell in a 100-card singleton format built around value engines and permanents that compound over time. Pauper is where Blastoderm has historically mattered most; at common, a shroud 5/5 for four mana in green was a legitimate threat in older Stompy and Tron shells, though the format has since outpaced it. Legacy and Vintage both have access to it, but neither format has any reason to run Blastoderm when the competition at four mana is absurd. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander read — the card is legal but finds no natural home.

Price Context
Current price
$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Blastoderm is deep bulk — pick it out of any common box for free or close to it. The price is stable because demand is essentially zero in competitive play, so there's no floor to fall through and no ceiling to chase.
