Blackblade Reforged turns any legendary creature into a one-shot threat by adding +1/+1 for each land you control — that's often +10 or more in Commander for a three-mana equip on a five-mana legendary. The seven-mana base equip cost is brutal on anything non-legendary, but Balan, Wandering Knight bypasses it entirely, which is exactly why those two cards belong in the same sentence.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Balan, Wandering Knight
Balan, Wandering Knight can attach all equipment to itself for two mana as a tap ability, meaning Blackblade Reforged lands for two mana and immediately turns Balan into a 20-plus-power double striker — a clean one-shot kill vector that the deck is built around.

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider
Lara Croft, Tomb Raider is a legendary creature that rewards aggressive attacking, and Blackblade Reforged's legendary-creature equip cost makes it cheap to move onto her while inflating her power to lethal levels with the lands you've accumulated.

Wyleth, Soul of Steel
Wyleth, Soul of Steel draws cards equal to the number of auras and equipment attached to it, so Blackblade Reforged pulls double duty — it generates a card draw trigger while simultaneously pumping Wyleth's power by double digits.

Thrun, Breaker of Silence
Thrun, Breaker of Silence is hexproof and can't be countered, making it an ideal Blackblade Reforged host — opponents can't remove the creature before the equip resolves, and the resulting power total ends games in one swing.

Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale
Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale lets Knights equip for free, which zeroes out Blackblade Reforged's equip cost entirely and turns every attacking legendary Knight into a potential one-hit kill.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Blackblade Reforged actually lives — by mid-game you're sitting on ten-plus lands, the legendary equip cost is trivially cheap on your commander, and that translates to lethal commander damage out of nowhere. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's legal but essentially unplayable; three mana to cast and then three or seven to equip is far too slow in formats where games end by turn three or four, and the power bonus rarely reaches a meaningful threshold before you're dead. Oathbreaker is the format most likely to replicate the Commander experience, since you're always guaranteed a legendary planeswalker to enable the discounted equip cost and the game plan is similar in structure.
