Black Cat is a 1/1 for two mana that forces a random discard only when it dies — a fragile trigger on an underpowered body. The effect is real but unreliable; opponents choose when to block or ignore it, which means you rarely get the discard when it matters most.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Black Cat sits at the bottom of the discard-synergy pile — Nekusar, the Mindrazer and Tinybones, Trinket Thief both want consistent forced discard, and a one-shot random trigger on a 1/1 doesn't meet that bar. Pauper is the most plausible home, where the card pool shrinks enough that cheap discard effects gain relative value, though even there Black Cat competes with Duress and Raven's Crime for slots. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer the card is legal but irrelevant — faster, more reliable discard exists at every turn of the curve. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: you need repeatable pressure, not a coin-flip trigger.

Price Context
Current price
$0.30 bulk tier
At $0.30, Black Cat is firmly bulk — the price reflects the card's limited competitive demand across every format. It won't appreciate; supply is deep and the effect too narrow to drive a spike.
