Bifurcate puts a second copy of any nontoken creature already on the battlefield directly into play — no casting, no mana cost, just a free duplicate. Four mana at sorcery speed is the real price, and it's steep enough that you only run this when the creature you're copying is worth six or more mana of effect.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Bifurcate actually lives — singleton rules create the scarcity that makes copying your own best creature genuinely powerful, and the 100-card format gives you enough high-value targets to justify the slot. Legacy and Vintage legality is technically true, but four-mana sorceries that don't immediately win the game don't compete in either environment. Oathbreaker is a reasonable home if your signature spell plan involves a game-ending creature that Bifurcate can double up on.

Price Context
Current price
$0.39 bulk tier
At $0.39, Bifurcate sits firmly in bulk territory — easy to pick up without thinking about it. The price reflects its narrow application rather than any lack of raw power; it holds that floor as long as it stays a Commander-only consideration.
