Bear Trap taps a creature without flying, without trample, and without haste for four mana — a conditional, temporary answer that doesn't remove the threat. Outside of very narrow tap-matters synergies, Bear Trap is outclassed by instant-speed removal that actually solves the problem.

In Commander, Bear Trap competes against removal spells that cost less and do more — Swords to Plowshares, Beast Within, and even Generous Gift all answer any creature permanently for one to two mana. Bear Trap's restrictions (no flying, no trample, no haste) mean it whiffs on the most dangerous creatures at the worst moments. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Legacy, a four-mana artifact that taps one creature for a turn is simply unplayable. Pauper has more room for creative picks, but even there the card draws the wrong side of the efficiency line.

Price Context
Current price
$0.19 bulk tier
Bear Trap is deep bulk at $0.19, and nothing about its effect suggests that changes. Bulk stays bulk when demand is absent, and no current archetype is clamoring for conditional tap effects on four-mana artifacts.
