Barrier of Bones trades a one-time Surveil 1 on entry for a 0/3 defender that blocks exactly one creature per turn — the stat line is unplayable in nearly every context. Unless you're actively stacking Surveil synergies, this slot has better options at the same mana cost.
Format Analysis

In Commander, Barrier of Bones is a fringe inclusion that only earns a slot in dedicated Surveil or graveyard-value decks — the body is too small to matter in a four-player game and the single Surveil trigger doesn't justify a card slot outside of synergy shells. Pauper is the format where it comes closest to relevance, since one-mana defenders with upside have more room to breathe in slower, resource-tight games, though it still sits at the bottom of that pile. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer, Barrier of Bones doesn't compete; every format has cheaper or more impactful one-drops that block and filter. Vintage has no use for it. The card is essentially a Commander-only pickup, and even there only in the right shell.

$0.08 bulk tier
At $0.08, Barrier of Bones is deep bulk — you'll find copies in common boxes or thrown in as draft chaff. There's no meaningful demand driver to change that, so treat it as a free include if you already own one and nothing better is available.
