Ballista Squad turns any number of creatures into a repeatable, instant-speed removal cannon — the cost is that it asks for both mana and tapped creatures every activation, which is steep in competitive metas. It earns a slot in token-heavy Commander builds where you're already flooding the board, but it's too slow and mana-hungry anywhere the table moves fast.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Ballista Squad is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but its competitive presence in non-Commander formats is effectively zero — four mana for a 2/2 that requires additional mana and tapped creatures to do anything is not a Modern or Legacy rate. Commander is the card's real home, specifically token-generating decks in white that can fund activations without sacrificing relevant pieces. In Oathbreaker it sees fringe play in the same token shells, but the 58-card decks and faster clocks make the activation cost harder to justify.

Pricing data for Ballista Squad isn't currently available, but the card is a bulk common that routinely shows up in dime boxes and bulk lots — expect to pay well under $0.50 at any game store. It's not a card you need to hunt down; pick one up opportunistically rather than making a special order.
