Aven Riftwatcher enters with two +1/+1 counters that vanish when it leaves, netting 4 life on each end of a flicker — and in any deck that blinks creatures repeatedly, that life total climbs fast. The vanishing clause is a feature, not a bug: it turns every bounce or flicker into a free lifegain trigger.

Aven Riftwatcher is a Pauper staple in flicker shells, where repeatable ETB triggers are the whole game plan and four total life per blink adds up quickly. In Commander it's a niche role-player — run it in Brago, King Eternal or Aminatou, the Fateshifter builds that want cheap, recurrable life padding, but it doesn't pull enough weight in the 99 without a dedicated blink engine behind it. Legacy and Vintage have access to the same synergies at far higher power density, so Aven Riftwatcher doesn't see meaningful play there. It's essentially a Pauper card that moonlights in Commander.
