Aven Redeemer trades a tapped creature you control to prevent all damage to target creature or player — a narrow protection effect stapled to a 2/2 flier for four mana. The cost is too steep for what you get: four mana and a creature to redirect damage is a losing exchange in almost every game state.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Aven Redeemer is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but sees virtually no play in any of them. In Commander, four mana for conditional damage prevention doesn't compete with cheaper, more flexible protection like Swiftfoot Boots or Mother of Runes. Pauper is the only format where the card pool is restricted enough to consider it, and even there the activated ability's tap cost makes it unreliable as a combat trick. Legacy and Vintage ignore Aven Redeemer entirely — the power floor in those formats is simply too high.

Price Context
Current price
$0.10 bulk tier
At $0.10, Aven Redeemer is deep bulk — the kind of card that costs more to ship than to buy. That price is stable because demand is essentially zero, so don't expect movement in either direction.
