Aven Liberator grants a target creature protection from the color of your choice until end of turn — useful for pushing through blockers or dodging targeted removal — but four mana at sorcery speed for a 2/3 body that replaces itself only in the loosest sense is a steep ask. Better protection effects exist at half the cost, and Aven Liberator rarely makes the cut outside of dedicated flicker or morph shells.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Aven Liberator is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, Pauper, and Oathbreaker, but sees virtually no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, the four-mana sorcery-speed protection effect is too slow and too narrow — you can't even use it as a reactive save at instant speed without a flicker enabler. Pauper is the one format where budget commons see real scrutiny, but even there, the effect doesn't line up with what aggressive or control commons decks want. Aven Liberator is essentially a casual Commander card at best, and a fringe one at that.

Price Context
Current price
$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Aven Liberator is deep bulk — the kind of card that shows up in draft chaff piles and bulk rare bins. That price reflects demand accurately, and there's no realistic scenario where Aven Liberator appreciates in value.
