Aven Fogbringer bounces a land on entry, which is real disruption stapled to a 2/1 flying body for four mana — the problem is that four mana for a 2/1 is a bad deal even before you account for the bounce being symmetrical in impact. Cheaper, faster tempo plays exist at every point on the curve, so Aven Fogbringer earns a slot only in narrow blink or landfall contexts where the trigger gets looped.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Aven Fogbringer is a fringe inclusion at best — the format's slower pace makes the land-bounce relevant only when you're blinking it repeatedly with something like Brago, King Eternal, and even then the body is undersized for four mana. In Pauper, where commons have to pull real weight, the tempo loss of a four-mana 2/1 is disqualifying; blue has access to far more efficient bounce at common. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters — Aven Fogbringer doesn't come close to the power threshold those formats demand. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: situationally fine, practically outclassed.

Price Context
Current price
$0.10 bulk tier
At $0.10, Aven Fogbringer sits firmly in bulk territory and is unlikely to climb without a dedicated combo shell pushing demand. It's a safe pickup for penny-a-piece value if you're building a blink deck on a strict budget, but there's no financial case for speculating on copies.
