Avalanche destroys up to four lands for four mana — one of the most mana-efficient mass land destruction spells ever printed. It's a niche card that wins games in the right shell and earns a justified ban from most polite tables.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Avalanche sees virtually no competitive play in Legacy or Vintage, where faster and more targeted disruption dominates, but it's legal in both. In Commander, Avalanche occupies a specific and controversial slot: land destruction decks running Numot, the Devastator or Kellan, the Kid are the primary homes, and the card's symmetry means you need a meaningful mana advantage — through extra lands, fast mana, or land recursion — to not blow yourself up alongside your opponents. Oathbreaker is legal but the smaller format size makes symmetric land wipes even harder to build around.

Price Context
Current price
$0.15 bulk tier
At $0.15, Avalanche is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not demand. That price reflects its narrow role; it won't creep up unless land destruction strategies see a sudden spike in Commander popularity, which is unlikely given the social friction the archetype generates.
