Augmenting Automaton card art
Augmenting Automaton is a one-mana artifact creature that can pay three mana to put a +1/+1 counter on itself — a slow, expensive ability that rarely justifies the slot. The only reason to run it is as a cheap artifact body that counts toward synergy-based payoffs, not for anything it does on its own.

In Commander, Augmenting Automaton earns its slot only in artifact-synergy decks that need the lowest-cost artifact body available — the activated ability is nearly irrelevant, but the one-mana artifact creature type is a real credential. Pauper is where it has the most competitive footing, slotting into artifact-based aggro or storm shells that need cheap artifacts to sacrifice or recur. In Modern, Pioneer, and Legacy it is strictly outclassed by artifacts that do more for the same cost, and sees no meaningful play in those formats. Vintage has no use for it either — the power ceiling there is too high for a vanilla-adjacent one-drop.

Price Context

Current price

$0.03 bulk tier

At $0.03, Augmenting Automaton is deep bulk — it costs less than a sleeve and holds no financial value to speak of. Pick it up as an afterthought when you need a cheap artifact body, and don't expect that price to move in either direction.
