Assault // Battery puts a 3/3 creature on the board or deals 2 damage to a creature or player — two effects stapled together for a combined five mana across two separate spells. Neither half is efficient enough to run on its own, and that's the problem: split cards live or die by whether both halves pull weight, and Assault // Battery fails that test in almost every format.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Assault // Battery is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but competitive play has no use for it. In Legacy and Vintage, two mana for 2 damage and three mana for a vanilla 3/3 are embarrassingly below rate. Modern has moved so far past either effect that Assault // Battery doesn't register. Commander is the only home where split cards with flexible modes see casual play, but even there you're running this only if the deck desperately needs both a token and a ping effect and has no better options — which is almost never true.

Price Context
Current price
$0.19 bulk tier
At $0.19, Assault // Battery is deep bulk, and that price is correct. There's no competitive demand and no Commander archetype chasing it, so it will stay in bulk bins indefinitely.
