Assassin's Strike destroys any target creature and forces a discard — clean, unconditional removal with a bonus that punishes hand-reliant opponents. The problem is six mana for a single-target sorcery-speed answer; at that cost, you can do better in almost every black deck.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Assassin's Strike is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but the only format where it sees any real consideration is Commander — and even there it sits at the fringe. Six mana at sorcery speed is simply too slow for Constructed formats where one-mana interaction is the baseline. In Commander, the discard rider occasionally earns it a slot in Mogis, God of Slaughter-style punishment builds or decks that care about opponents having empty hands, but most black decks would rather run Hero's Downfall, Eaten Alive, or any number of two-to-four-mana answers that don't require tapping out on turn six.

Price Context
Current price
$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Assassin's Strike is deep bulk — the price reflects the demand, which is nearly zero. It won't appreciate; if anything it stays a bulk rare indefinitely, so there's no reason to hold copies hoping for a reprint bump.
