Ashen Rider card art
Ashen Rider enters and exiles any permanent — not destroys, exiles — and then does it again when it leaves the battlefield. Eight mana is a real cost, but reanimation shells treat that as a non-issue, and Sefris of the Hidden Ways in particular treats Ashen Rider as a repeatable board-control engine rather than a one-shot answer.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Sefris of the Hidden Ways

Sefris of the Hidden Ways

46.9% of decks · synergy 0.44

Sefris of the Hidden Ways triggers dungeon progression every time a creature dies, and Ashen Rider's enters-and-leaves triggers mean a single reanimate-and-sacrifice loop can exile two permanents while advancing Sefris toward Dungeon of the Mad Mage's game-ending payoff.

02
Athreos, Shroud-Veiled

Athreos, Shroud-Veiled

36.5% of decks · synergy 0.35

Athreos, Shroud-Veiled places coin counters on creatures, returning them to hand or field when they die — so Athreos, Shroud-Veiled turns Ashen Rider into a permanent exile machine that resets every turn, firing both the ETB and the leaves-the-battlefield trigger on a loop.

04
Karador, Ghost Chieftain

Karador, Ghost Chieftain

17.3% of decks · synergy 0.16

Karador, Ghost Chieftain lets you cast creatures directly from the graveyard, so Ashen Rider becomes a once-per-turn exile spell that costs graveyard slots instead of eight mana — Karador, Ghost Chieftain can rebuy it repeatedly as long as the yard is stocked.

Commander is where Ashen Rider lives — reanimation is ubiquitous, eight mana is a non-issue when you're cheating it into play, and exiling two permanents over a creature's lifecycle is backbreaking at a table where commanders hide in the command zone. In Legacy and Vintage, Ashen Rider sees fringe reanimator play as a silver-bullet threat that answers Leyline of the Void and other enchantments that destroy can't touch. Modern and Pioneer have faster, cheaper options, so Ashen Rider rarely competes there outside of dedicated Show and Tell or reanimator brews. It's legal in Oathbreaker but the eight-mana body is harder to justify without Commander-level recursion density.

Price Context

Current price

$0.30 bulk tier

At $0.30, Ashen Rider is outright bulk — a card with genuine Commander demand that's just never been scarce. That price is stable; it sees enough reanimator play to stay in print awareness, but wide availability keeps it firmly in the bulk bin.
