Ashen Powder reanimates any creature from any graveyard — including an opponent's — and puts it under your control, which is the whole appeal. Four mana at sorcery speed is the ceiling on what this effect should cost, and Ashen Powder hits it exactly, making it a serviceable but unspectacular choice where cheaper alternatives aren't available.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Ashen Powder is a Commander card through and through — the singleton format's slower pace and multiplayer graveyards make four mana for a reanimation spell acceptable, and stealing from opponents adds real upside in a pod. In Legacy and Vintage, it's legal but essentially unplayable; those formats have Reanimate and Animate Dead at one mana, and Ashen Powder can't compete on that axis. Oathbreaker is the one other format where it could see fringe play if the planeswalker and signature spell create enough graveyard synergy to justify the slot.

Price Context
Current price
$1.25 cheap tier
At $1.25, Ashen Powder sits in the cheap tier — low enough that budget isn't the reason to skip it, but the slot competition from Reanimate, Animate Dead, and similar effects keeps it from being a staple purchase. It holds its price quietly as a bulk rare with a narrow audience rather than a card with broad demand.
