Archfiend of Sorrows enters and immediately halves every opponent's board, then demands a removal spell or starts swinging for 6 flying damage. Eight mana is the real cost, and that price tag keeps it out of fast metas — but in midrange and reanimator shells, the enter-the-battlefield effect alone justifies the slot.

In Commander, Archfiend of Sorrows fills a specific niche: a reanimation target or Kaalia of the Vast payload that doubles as a board-wide debuff the moment it resolves. The -2/-2 effect hits all opponents simultaneously, which scales well in four-player games and can wipe token boards clean on entry. In Legacy and Vintage, eight mana is simply uncompetitive — those formats kill you before you cast it fairly, and better reanimation targets exist for cheat-into-play strategies. Modern is equally unkind; the mana investment doesn't match what the format demands at that slot. Archfiend of Sorrows is fundamentally a Commander card, best in decks that either cheat it into play or loop it for repeated enter-the-battlefield triggers.

Price Context
Current price
$0.22 bulk tier
At $0.22, Archfiend of Sorrows is deep bulk — there's no price barrier to picking up a copy. It won't hold or gain value, but for the effect it delivers in Commander reanimator and Kaalia builds, the cost of entry is essentially zero.
