Appetite for Brains strips the most dangerous card out of an opponent's hand — anything with mana value 4 or greater — before it ever hits the board. The catch is that it whiffs entirely against low-to-the-ground strategies, so it earns its slot in high-powered metas where the threats you care about cost four or more.

In Commander, Appetite for Brains is a surgical discard spell aimed squarely at the game-winning bombs that dominate higher-powered tables — the Cyclonic Rifts, Thassas Oracle lines, and haymaker creatures your opponents are sandbagging. Legacy and Vintage have access to so many superior discard options — Thoughtseize and Duress chief among them — that Appetite for Brains rarely makes the cut outside of budget builds or very specific targeting needs. Modern's threat density has crept high enough that the CMC-4-or-greater clause usually hits something relevant, but again, Thoughtseize just does the job better. Appetite for Brains finds its most honest home in Commander, where every opponent's hand is likely packed with expensive spells and surgical disruption on turn one can reshape the entire game.

Price Context
Current price
$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Appetite for Brains is pure bulk — it costs less than a sleeve. That price is stable because the card sees minimal competitive play outside Commander, so there's no demand spike coming, but there's also no reason not to pick up a copy for any black discard package that needs it.
