Ant Queen is a mana sink that never runs dry — pay one green, get a 1/1 Insect, repeat as long as you have mana. At five mana for a 5/5 with that activated ability, the cost is real, but commanders like Jaheira, Friend of the Forest and Zask, Skittering Swarmlord convert every token into additional resources, which turns the Queen from a threat into an engine.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Zask, Skittering Swarmlord
Zask, Skittering Swarmlord triggers whenever an Insect you control dies, which means each token Ant Queen produces is a potential card advantage or mana refund waiting to happen. Half of all Zask decks run Ant Queen, and the 50% inclusion rate tells you exactly how central she is to that loop.

Grist, the Hunger Tide
Grist, the Hunger Tide mills and reanimates Insects while its loyalty ticks up with every bug on board, so the steady stream of 1/1s from Ant Queen accelerates both the mill and the ultimate. At 41% inclusion across Grist builds, it's a consistent slot.

Xira, the Golden Sting
Xira, the Golden Sting places poison counters whenever Insects deal combat damage, so flooding the board with Ant Queen tokens means more attackers converting into infect pressure. About a third of Xira decks make room for it.

Aatchik, Emerald Radian
Aatchik, Emerald Radian rewards you for going wide with creatures, and Ant Queen's repeatable token generation feeds that strategy as long as you have green mana to invest. The 34% inclusion rate reflects how reliably the Queen fills Aatchik's preferred board state.

Thromok the Insatiable
Thromok the Insatiable devours your own creatures to grow into a lethal threat, and Ant Queen supplies a fresh batch of fodder every turn without sacrificing a permanent you actually care about. It's a lower-synergy fit at 15% inclusion, but the role is clear.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|

| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Ant Queen earns its keep — the five-mana cost is acceptable in a 40-life format, and the activated ability scales with the kind of mana production green Commander decks routinely assemble. Insect tribal synergies and token-doubler effects are abundant enough that the Queen often does more work here than her raw stats suggest. Ant Queen is legal in Legacy, Vintage, and Modern, but she sees essentially no competitive play in any of them — five mana for a 5/5 that makes 1/1s at additional cost is too slow against those formats' threats and interaction. Oathbreaker is a fine casual home if you're building around a green token signature spell, but Commander remains the clear primary format.

Current pricing data for Ant Queen isn't available in this page's dataset, so check Scryfall or your preferred retailer for the live number. Given that it's a casual Commander staple with no competitive demand outside that format, it has historically sat in the budget-to-low-mid range — worth picking up whenever you build an Insect or token deck that can use it.
