Angrath, the Flame-Chained card art
Angrath, the Flame-Chained enters at five mana and immediately strips a card from every opponent's hand while dealing two damage — that's real, guaranteed pressure before his abilities even factor in. The cost is five mana in Rakdos colors with no built-in protection, which means he eats removal before his ultimate is ever a factor outside of dedicated shell like Sethron, Hurloon General.

Sethron, Hurloon General

Sethron, Hurloon General

18.4% of decks · synergy 0.17

Sethron, Hurloon General cares about Minotaurs, and Angrath, the Flame-Chained is one of the tribe's few planeswalkers — he slots in as both a flavor hit and a disruptive midgame piece that keeps opponents off cards while Sethron builds the board.

02

Nicol Bolas, the Ravager

11.7% of decks · synergy 0.11

Nicol Bolas, the Ravager decks lean into hand disruption and punishing opponents for having resources, and Angrath, the Flame-Chained's plus ability lines up directly with that gameplan — the two stack discard pressure turn after turn.

03
Mogis, God of Slaughter

Mogis, God of Slaughter

12.8% of decks · synergy 0.11

Mogis, God of Slaughter wants opponents bleeding every single turn, and Angrath, the Flame-Chained's damage-on-discard plus adds another tax to the pile — in a pillowfort-punisher shell, every tick of his loyalty is another two damage to each opponent.

Format Analysis

Commander is where Angrath, the Flame-Chained sees essentially all of his play — the multiplayer gameplan of stripping a card and dealing damage to each opponent scales up in ways one-on-one formats simply can't match. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer he's legal but irrelevant; five-mana planeswalkers without immediate board impact don't compete against the threats those formats demand. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander format where he's worth a second look, since the smaller life totals and singleton constraints make his discard-and-damage loop more punishing. Outside of 100-card decks and Oathbreaker, he's a casual card — and there's nothing wrong with that.

Price Context

Current price

$3.07 cheap tier

At $3.07, Angrath, the Flame-Chained sits in the cheap tier — affordable enough to include on a whim in any Rakdos or Minotaur build without budget hesitation. Demand is narrow and niche-driven, so don't expect the price to move much in either direction.
