Angelic Captain card art
Angelic Captain swings as a potentially massive flier the turn it enters — every allied creature you attack with adds a +1/+1 counter permanently, so a wide board translates directly into a closing threat. Five mana is a real ask for a card that does nothing without attackers, but in any deck that already wants to go wide in combat, it pays off fast.

Angelic Captain is a Commander card through and through — the format's multiplayer combat and go-wide strategies are exactly where a cumulative counter engine shines. In 60-card competitive formats like Modern and Legacy, it's a five-mana creature that needs multiple attacking bodies to do anything relevant, which is far too slow and conditional against efficient interaction. Pioneer is similarly hostile; the card has never found a foothold there. Commander is the only context where Angelic Captain is genuinely at home: longer games, wider boards, and tribal or aggro strategies that already want to be attacking with a crowd.

Pricing data isn't available for Angelic Captain at the moment, so check Scryfall or TCGPlayer for a current number. Given that it sees essentially no play outside Commander and occupies a niche role even there, it has historically been an affordable pickup — budget allies or go-wide builds shouldn't have trouble finding copies.
