Ancient Craving draws you three cards at instant speed for four mana — that's the whole story, and it's a fine one in black. The life payment is irrelevant in Commander, and Strefan, Maurer Progenitor lists run it because three cards in hand means three chances to hit a Blood token trigger.

Ancient Craving is a Commander card through and through — the four-mana cost is acceptable when games go long and the three-card refill stabilizes a hand drained by early interaction.
