Ancestor Dragon pays you life equal to your attacking creatures' total power whenever you swing with a white army — on a wide board, that's 20-plus life in a single combat. Six mana for a 6/6 flyer with no evasion clause is a real cost, but the lifegain trigger makes it a legitimate finisher in token strategies.

Commander is where Ancestor Dragon belongs — wide white token strategies regularly swing with ten or more creatures, and a single trigger can gain 30-plus life, which is the kind of stabilization that swings a multiplayer game. In 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, six mana is a prohibitive rate when cheaper threats close games faster, and Ancestor Dragon won't see competitive play there. Legacy and Vintage have access to far more efficient options at every point on the curve. Standard is the only 60-card context where it could see fringe play in a dedicated weenie swarm list, but even there the mana cost is awkward for an aggro curve.

$0.49 bulk tier
At $0.49, Ancestor Dragon is deep bulk — easy to pick up as a one-of for any token Commander deck without thinking twice about cost. Bulk mythics at this price tend to stay flat unless a new commander or precon pushes the strategy into the spotlight.
