Ana Battlemage offers three kicker modes — discard, untap, and discard-at-sorcery-speed — that together cover disruption, combo enablement, and hand attack on a single body. The catch is that each relevant mode costs an additional two mana on top of the base three, so you're paying five or seven mana for effects cheaper cards do standalone.

In Commander, Ana Battlemage is a fringe role-player — the three-mana base is acceptable, but you're rarely paying five or seven to activate both kicker modes, which is where the card's value actually lives. Legacy and Vintage have access to better targeted discard and untap effects at lower cost, so Ana Battlemage doesn't see competitive play there. Modern is legal but similarly uncompetitive; the format's efficiency bar makes a three-mana 2/3 with conditional kicker irrelevant. Commander remains the only home where slow, multipurpose value creatures can find a niche, specifically in Sultai graveyard or untap-combo shells willing to spend the mana.
