Amulet of Unmaking exiles any artifact, creature, or land — permanently — but costs five mana and a tap plus two untap activations to do it. That throughput is too slow and too expensive for most Commander tables where cheaper, instant-speed answers exist.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Amulet of Unmaking is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees virtually no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, the five-mana equip-style activation clock means you're trading an entire turn's worth of mana to remove one permanent — a poor rate when Swords to Plowshares and Generous Gift answer anything for one or two mana. Legacy and Vintage have zero interest in a repeatable-but-slow removal artifact when those formats move at instant speed from turn one. Oathbreaker is the only context where a repeatable exile effect on an artifact might sneak into a grindy, lower-power list, but even there the activation cost is a serious bottleneck.

Current price
$0.68 bulk tier
At $0.68, Amulet of Unmaking sits firmly in bulk territory, and that price reflects its playability honestly. Don't expect it to appreciate — bulk removal artifacts without a clear competitive home tend to stay bulk.
