Ammit Eternal card art
Ammit Eternal hits the board as a 5/5 for three mana — that rate demands an answer — and every spell an opponent casts chips it down with -1/-1 counters that feed Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons into a snake factory. The catch is that opponents control the counter placement, so in spell-heavy pods it shrinks fast; in counter-synergy decks, that's a feature, not a bug.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons

Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons

57.0% of decks · synergy 0.56

Ammit Eternal is one of Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons's most reliable snake engines — every spell any opponent casts during their turn drops a -1/-1 counter on Ammit, which immediately triggers Hapatra to generate a deathtouch snake, turning the table's collective spell-casting into your board presence.

02
Auntie Ool, Cursewretch

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch

22.3% of decks · synergy 0.21

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch cares about cursing opponents and exploiting their spell activity, and Ammit Eternal's punishing counter-distribution fits that gameplan — the more opponents cast, the more Ammit shrinks and the more triggers Auntie Ool has to work with.

Format Analysis

In Commander, Ammit Eternal earns its slot almost exclusively in -1/-1 counter shells — outside of Hapatra or similar synergy commanders, a 5/5 that opponents can shrink at will is too unreliable as a standalone threat in a four-player game. In Modern and Pioneer, aggressive black strategies have rarely reached for it because three mana for a creature with a built-in downside is a tough sell when the format demands consistency. Legacy and Vintage are simply too fast for a three-mana 5/5 with no immediate impact beyond raw stats. Ammit Eternal is a Commander card through and through, and even there it belongs in a specific deck, not a generic black pile.

Price Context

Current price

$0.92 bulk tier

At $0.92, Ammit Eternal sits squarely in bulk rare territory, which is accurate — demand is narrow enough that the price reflects its single-deck niche. It's unlikely to climb without a reprint catalyst or a new counter-synergy commander breaking through, so pick it up cheaply when you need it and don't expect it to move.
