Alpine Guide gives you an untapped Mountain the turn it enters — but the opponent gets one too, which makes it a ramp piece that actively improves red or land-synergy decks built to exploit that drawback. Run it because the tempo gain matters for your strategy, not as a generic ramp slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t

| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Alpine Guide occupies a niche in mono-red or Gruul decks that want Mountain count for cards like Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle or need cheap bodies that pull lands into play — the symmetrical downside barely registers when you're the one with a landfall or snow subtheme built around it. In Legacy and Vintage, it's too slow and too fair; three mana for an ETB land fetch on a 3/3 doesn't compete in formats where the game is often decided by turn two or three. Modern sees occasional fringe use in Mountains-matter lists but Alpine Guide is never a priority pick there. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander calculus — tight synergy decks can justify it, generalist builds cannot.

Price Context
Current price
$0.16 bulk tier
At $0.16, Alpine Guide is deep bulk — you'll find it in any dollar bin or as a throw-in with an order. That price is stable because demand is narrow and supply is plentiful; don't expect movement in either direction.
