Alchemist's Apprentice trades itself for a single card draw — functional, but a two-mana 1/1 with no immediate board impact is a steep price for that effect. The exception is Out of the Tombs, where the sacrifice clause becomes a feature rather than a cost.

In Commander, Alchemist's Apprentice sits at the bottom of the draw-a-card pile — Phyrexian Arena and Preordain do more for less, and a 1/1 body rarely matters at a 100-card table. Pauper is its most credible home, where the card pool is shallow enough that sacrifice synergies and cheap cantrip bodies carry real weight. Legacy and Vintage have no interest — the bar for a two-mana 1/1 is impossibly high when Brainstorm and Ponder exist. Oathbreaker mirrors Commander in that the effect is technically fine but almost always outclassed.
