Akroan Sergeant trades on first strike and renown — hit a player once and it becomes a 3/3 first striker, which is reasonable for three mana in an aggressive red deck. The problem is that three mana for a vanilla-until-it-connects creature is too slow for formats where removal is cheap and opponents don't hand you free attacks.

In Commander, Akroan Sergeant is a fringe inclusion in aggressive Boros or mono-red combat decks — renown requires connecting with a player, which gets harder as the game develops and boards fill up. Pauper is where it has the most theoretical viability, since the common card pool is shallow enough that a 3/3 first striker can actually matter, though it still competes with more efficient aggressive commons. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's unplayable at the competitive level — three mana for a conditional 3/3 is irrelevant against the threats those formats generate. Treat Akroan Sergeant as a budget Commander roleplayer in creature-combat decks, nowhere else.
