Ajani's Comrade is a two-mana 1/1 that can grow into a 2/2 trample if you control another creature with a +1/+1 counter — reasonable upside, but it asks a lot of setup for a body that's still undersized. Run it in dedicated counters decks where the condition is trivially met; everywhere else it's outclassed by cheaper or more reliable options.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Ajani's Comrade is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Commander it has a narrow home in +1/+1 counter strategies — think Hamza, Guardian of Arashin or Ezuri, Claw of Progress shells — where the evolve-adjacent condition is almost always online and the trample matters for pushing damage. Outside of that synergy pocket, a two-mana 1/1 with a conditional upside can't compete with the card density Commander demands. In 60-card formats the bar is simply too high; Modern and Pioneer have no interest in a creature this fragile and this conditional.

$0.12 bulk tier
At $0.12, Ajani's Comrade is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a common box rather than purchase. It holds no meaningful financial value and is unlikely to move off the floor without an unexpected reprint in a high-profile product or a sudden spike in casual counters demand.
