Aether Tradewinds bounces any permanent you control back to hand alongside any permanent an opponent controls — a two-for-one tempo play at instant speed for three mana. The catch is the self-bounce is mandatory, not optional, which means it only earns a slot when you want that trigger.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Aether Tradewinds sees almost no play outside Commander, where the mandatory self-bounce transforms from a drawback into an engine — flickering an enters-the-battlefield permanent while resetting an opponent's threat. In Pauper it's technically legal but three mana for a bounce spell with a string attached loses badly to cheaper, unconditional options. Legacy and Vintage have zero interest; Modern and Pioneer likewise. Commander is the only format where Aether Tradewinds earns genuine consideration, specifically in decks that want repeatable ETB triggers or need to reuse a key artifact or enchantment.
