Adaptive Gemguard card art
Adaptive Gemguard enters with a +1/+1 counter on each other creature you control that already has one — a board-wide pump that scales with counters already in play, not just new ones. The cost is two mana and a 2/2 body that contributes to the count itself, making it a free threat in any shell that cares about counters; Ghave, Guru of Spores decks will routinely drop this and immediately double the value of a wide token board.

Format Analysis

oathbreaker

Adaptive Gemguard is a Commander card — its effect is proportional to board state, and small-format games rarely develop the counter density needed to make the enter-the-battlefield trigger matter. In Standard, Pioneer, and Modern it competes with more efficient threats that don't require setup, and in Pauper the counters payoff archetype has tighter, faster options at common. Legacy and Vintage have no interest. In Commander, though, Adaptive Gemguard slots cleanly into any counters-matters strategy and frequently enters to put three or four additional counters on the board at once, which is a legitimate rate for two mana.

Price Context

Current price

$0.08 bulk tier

At $0.08, Adaptive Gemguard is deep bulk — you'll find it in a commons box before you find it on a vendor page. Bulk rares with narrow Commander applications tend to stay at this floor, so there's no reason to hold copies for value, but there's also no reason not to pick up a playset for almost nothing.
