Academic Probation locks a single nonland permanent or spell type out of the game for a turn cycle — a tempo hit that can stop a combo piece, a commander, or a critical spell at instant speed for just one mana. The effect is real, but the single-turn window and reliance on the Vote mechanic mean opponents can outvote you, and it disappears before most tables can capitalize.

In Commander, Academic Probation is a one-mana political tool that can freeze a threat for a full round, which sounds better than it plays — three opponents means three votes against you, and the lock evaporates before your next upkeep anyway. Legacy, Modern, Pioneer, and Vintage are all two-player formats where the Vote is effectively uncontested, but those formats move too fast and demand hard answers rather than one-turn delays; Academic Probation never sees those tables. Oathbreaker shares Commander's multiplayer structure, so the same political fragility applies, though the smaller deck size and lower power ceiling make tempo plays marginally more relevant.
