Abzan Devotee

Abzan Devotee is a Commander card through and through — its trigger only matters when you have a wide board and a steady stream of creature deaths, conditions that Commander's longer games provide naturally. In counter-synergy builds it functions as a resilience layer, softening the sting of board wipes and combat trades by distributing counters to survivors. In 60-card formats it simply doesn't make the cut: four mana for a 2/3 with a conditional, slow trigger is nowhere near competitive in Modern, Pioneer, or Legacy, where the game is often decided before this card's payoff materializes. Pauper is the one fringe case worth noting — counter-based go-wide strategies exist at common, and the card is legal — but the competition for four-drop slots is stiff even there.
